The Fall of New Castle

1929 marked the start of the Great Depression. Like most of America it crippled much of the New Castle economy. Most of the plants and mills suffered extreme losses and eventually shut down never to be reopened, in many instances the buildings were tore down. There were many different government programs set up to help the displaced people. This helped but only a little due to its inability to set up long term jobs as well as the limited amount of jobs it provided.
During the 1940’s the city saw a new spark of life. Plants and mills began to open up for business. This was mainly due to the many wars fought during the twentieth century, especially the Second World War. There was a mad rush reopen steel mills to help out the war effort. New mills were also opened up in the empty spaces where factories used to stand. This too did not last, because in the seventies the workers started to be surpassed by technology.  Many of the workers were let go and forced to find other sources of work.
